Baggage information - Air Canada, Air Transat and Sunwing


IMPORTANT NOTE

Always be sure to check with your carrier before your departure to be sure there have been no changes to the rules. All information presented here concerns economy class for South packages (plane and hotel). There may be different rules for cruise packages, South destinations in the United States and for Haiti. There is usually a fee for the first checked bag if you are taking a flight only. You will find details on other classes by visiting the sites (see direct links in the article) or by consulting your travel specialist. Also note that parents traveling with young children are entitled to additional items.

The photo above represents the dimensions accepted by Air Canada for cabin baggage.


The permitted weight for checked baggage is 23 kg and that for cabin baggage is 10 kg.

Allowance and size Each passenger is allowed one personal item on board. Your personal item must not exceed 23 cm x 28 cm x 13 cm (9 in. x 11 in. x 5 in.). Examples of personal items: • Bag or handbag; • Messenger bag, briefcase or laptop bag (containing a computer); • Small backpack, children's backpack or small sports bag (can be placed under the seat); • Camera bag (containing photographic equipment). In addition to a personal item, parents traveling with babies may bring a diaper bag on board as long as it meets the weight and size restrictions set out above. You can purchase a carry-on baggage allowance (which can be stored in the overhead compartment) for $25 each way (tax included) before your flight date or at the airport. Your carry-on baggage must not weigh more than 5 kg (11 lb) and must meet the dimensions of 51 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm (20 in. x 16 in. x 9 in.). Examples of hand luggage: • Small suitcase; • Sport bag; • Backpack. Please visit theCATSA website to learn more about what items are allowed in your carry-on baggage. All baggage that exceeds weight or dimension restrictions must be checked. Excess baggage fees will apply. TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PREPARING YOUR BAGGAGE We recommend that you put important items in your carry-on baggage in the unlikely event that your checked baggage is delayed or lost. Examples of important items to pack in your carry-on include:

  • Prescription drugs;

  • Travel documents and identity documents;

  • Information about your health insurance;

  • Cash and credit cards;

  • keys;

  • Personal electronic devices.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS If you have booked your destination wedding with Sunwing, you will have access to an overhead compartment during your flight reserved for the bride and groom's wedding attire. Please ensure you confirm this information with your group sales agent at least seven days before departure.

Items for babies and children A passenger is considered a baby if he or she is under two years old. An infant seated on the lap of his or her parent or guardian must remain there for the duration of the flight. CHILD OR BABY HAVING A PAID SEAT :

  • Two free items are allowed in addition to your 5kg hand baggage and checked baggage.

  • Items may include a stroller, car seat or playpen.

  • You must bring a car seat that complies with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) on board for your baby in a paid seat. He must remain in the car seat when the seat belt sign is on.

  • You can bring a CARES device as a free item, as long as it is designed for use on board an aircraft.

BABY SITTING ON KNEES:

  • For flights within Canada or the United States, two free items are allowed in addition to the 5 kg carry-on bag and the parent or guardian's checked bag.

  • For flights to and from the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, two free items are included, but the 5kg carry-on and checked baggage do not apply to lap-seated babies.

  • Free items may include a stroller, car seat or playpen.

Medical equipment and medication MEDICAL EQUIPMENT If you are traveling with medical equipment, it may be accepted at no additional cost. Arrangements must be made in advance with our Special Services team. A doctor's letter must be provided and the medical equipment must be for personal use. If you must use your medical equipment on board, it must have an independent power supply (i.e. batteries) since no power source is available on board. Please contact the Special Services team at least 72 hours before departure at specialservices@sunwing.ca or 1-877-SUNWING so they have time to make the necessary arrangements with the airline. MEDICATIONS All medications must be accompanied by a copy of the prescription and must be in their original packaging. We cannot provide a refrigerator for medications on board the flight. Musical instruments If as part of your hand baggage allowance, you bring a musical instrument on board, it must weigh less than 5 kg and comply with a maximum dimensions of 23 cm x 41 cm x 51 cm (9 in x 16 in. x 20 in.). A carry-on baggage fee of $25 each way (taxes included) applies and can be paid in advance or at the airport. Upon check-in, you will be required to sign a limited release form releasing Sunwing from any liability for damages. If your item exceeds the weight or dimension limits, it will need to be checked in, and if it exceeds the total baggage allowance, excess baggage fees will apply. Your instrument must be packaged in its appropriate case and must not contain any other items (such as clothing, shoes or other personal effects). Sports equipment Each passenger is allowed only one sports item. Customers can submit a request for special assistance to obtain authorization to transport their sports equipment. To do this, they must go to the “My Booking” portal on Sunwing.ca. A fee of $25 per trip (taxes included) will apply and must be paid at the airport. Sports equipment must be packaged in its appropriate container and must not contain other items (such as clothing, shoes or other personal effects). Upon check-in, you will be required to sign a limited release form releasing Sunwing from any liability for damages. Please note that standard transfer vehicles may not be able to transport oversized equipment and you may be required to pay additional fees for its transportation to your final destination. All permitted item weight and size limits are listed below. Items not specifically listed must be included in your standard checked baggage allowance. GOLF CLICKS Golf clubs can be checked for a fee of $25 per way (tax included), in addition to your checked baggage allowance, provided they weigh less than 20 kg (44 lbs). Otherwise, overweight baggage fees will apply. “Golf clubs” means a standard size golf bag containing a maximum of 14 clubs, 12 balls and a pair of shoes. BICYCLES There is a limit of one bicycle per person on Sunwing Airlines flights, and a fee of $25 CAD per trip (taxes included) applies. If the weight exceeds the total allowance of 20 kg, overweight baggage fees will apply. All bicycles must be placed in a rigid container specifically designed for transport in the hold OR in a bicycle case (foldable bicycles only). Note: Battery-powered bicycles (electric bicycles) are prohibited on board. Bicycles must be adequately prepared for storage in the hold:

  • The handlebars must be fixed to the side;

  • Tires must be deflated;

  • The pedals must be removed.

Restricted Items Items prohibited by law by Transport Canada and CATSA are not permitted on board or in checked baggage under any circumstances. In addition to the items listed by Transport Canada and CATSA, the following items are prohibited on Sunwing Airlines flights:

  • Seat belt extenders not provided by the airline;

  • Booster seats

  • Knee protectors

  • Balance devices powered by lithium batteries (including but not limited to Hoverboards, Segways, Balance Wheels, Solowheels and Airwheels);

  • Bicycles powered by a battery (electric bicycles).

Smart bags or luggage with non-removable lithium iron batteries are not accepted as carry-on or checked baggage on Sunwing Airlines flights. If your smart bag or luggage uses a removable lithium-iron battery, you must remove it and place it in your carry-on bag. SNORKELING EQUIPMENT Snorkeling equipment can be checked for a fee of $25 per way (tax included), in addition to your checked bag, provided it weighs less than 5 kg (11 lbs). Otherwise, overweight baggage fees will apply. Equipment may include a pair of fins and a mask. SCUBA DIVING EQUIPMENT Scuba diving equipment can be checked for a fee of $25 per way (tax included), in addition to your checked bag, provided it weighs less than 20 kg (44 lbs). ). Otherwise, overweight baggage fees will apply. All equipment must be stored securely in a rigid container specifically designed for transport in the hold. A complete scuba diving set includes one of each of the following:

  • Diving regulator;

  • manometer;

  • diving tank harness;

  • mask;

  • pair of fins;

  • tuba;

  • knife;

  • harpoon gun;

  • air gun;

  • safety jacket.

FISHING RODS Fishing rods can be checked for a fee of $25 per way (taxes included), in addition to your checked bag, as long as they weigh less than 5 kg (11 lbs). Otherwise, overweight baggage fees will apply. AIRBORNE BOARDS Airplanes can be registered for a fee of $25 per trip (taxes included), provided they weigh less than 20 kg (44 lbs). Otherwise, overweight baggage fees will apply. All equipment must be stored securely in a rigid container specifically designed for transport in the hold. The container may include a hover board, a traction kite, a helmet and any related accessories or clothing. KAYAKS, SURFBOARDS AND WINDBOARDS A flat fee of $100 per item, per trip (taxes included), will apply for all kayaks, surfboards and windsurfing boards. You can register a maximum of one kayak (excluding paddles, helmets, life jackets, etc.), one surfboard no longer than 3.6 m (12 ft) OR one windsurf board with a mast or a sail. All equipment must be stored securely in a rigid container specifically designed for transport in the hold. Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes (also described as vaporizers or e-cigarettes) must be stored in your carry-on baggage. They cannot be placed in your checked baggage or used on board. Please note that electronic cigarettes are prohibited in the Dominican Republic and Cuba, whether in carry-on or checked baggage. Dangerous Goods Dangerous goods are prohibited on Sunwing Airlines flights at all times. Please see Transport Canada's complete list of items considered dangerous goods. FIREARMS AND HUNTING EQUIPMENT Ammunition is strictly prohibited on all Sunwing Airlines flights. Sporting rifles may be carried in the hold, provided all documents and permits are presented and the Sunwing Firearms Declaration has been completed. All equipment may be subject to inspection upon check-in; it must be unloaded and disassembled, and the firing pins must be removed (if possible). It must be locked and packaged in a sturdy metal or wooden box, which can be sealed after inspection. Restricted Items Items prohibited by law by Transport Canada and CATSA are not permitted on board or in checked baggage under any circumstances. In addition to the items listed by Transport Canada and CATSA, the following items are prohibited on Sunwing Airlines flights:

  • Seat belt extenders not provided by the airline;

  • Booster seats

  • Device restricting the inclination of the seats (Knee Defender);

  • Balance devices powered by lithium batteries (including but not limited to Hoverboards, Segways, Balance Wheels, Solowheels and Airwheels).

Smart bags or luggage with non-removable lithium iron batteries are not accepted as carry-on or checked baggage on Sunwing Airlines flights. If your smart bag or luggage uses a removable lithium-iron battery, you must remove it and place it in your carry-on bag.
